Highly responsible and technical position which involves gaining and maintaining an extremely high proficiency level of all assigned cockpit duties. Other duties include assisting all Aviation Unit pilots in ensuring that all aircrafts are operated in a safe and effective manner.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Judicial Services & Training Division Captain. Performance is evaluated through observation, results obtained, and oral/written reports.

I. EXAMPLES OF SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES*:

· Conduct or facilitate all flight training of Aviation Unit personnel including pilot candidate evaluations, aircraft transition training, periodic qualification checks, specialty flight training which he/she is qualified to conduct and emergency flight training for Observers/Tactical Flight Officers. If the Civilian Chief Pilot is not properly certificated or qualified to conduct certain training, he/she will ensure that any outside vendors contracted for unit flight instruction are properly qualified and certificated

· Maintain a training file on all unit pilots including a copy of their Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airman Certificate and Class I or II Airman Medical Certificate

· Ensure that pilots maintain all requirements of appropriate Directives, Operations Manuals, FAA certifications, currency, and insurance carriers needed to act as a Pilot in Command of an aircraft

· Maintain all qualifications and insurance for each aircraft operated by the unit

· Ensure all flight training conducted adheres to FAA, Public Law, Directives, and Operations Manual guidelines

· Utilize other qualified and certified unit Pilots to assist with flight training as needed

· Meet with the Aviation Unit Commander to discuss training and qualification issues of unit pilots, as needed

· Monitor law enforcement radio communications while in flight and respond on the appropriate frequency when necessary

· Assist Aviation Unit Commander with any other duties assigned

I. WORK CONDITIONS:

Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments. Work schedule is generally stable, however, due to the emergency nature of this assignment, this position may require continuous scheduling adjustments without prior notice. Some overtime may be required. Assigned shift may be varied and subject to change without prior notice.

Will be required to work in unstable and potentially dangerous conditions, above and beyond what will be expected of any other civilian employee. NOTE : The Civilian Chief Pilot is not required to expose themselves to unnecessary dangers or perform a potentially life-threatening task which they are not qualified to perform.

I. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

· Working knowledge of all applicable Federal Aviation Regulations

· Working knowledge of the assigned aircraft procedures, limitations, and emergency procedures

· Highly skilled in piloting aircraft used by the aviation unit

· Skilled in the operation of law enforcement radios

· Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously

· Ability to follow instructions with minimal supervision

· Ability to establish and maintain a good working relationship with co-workers, ACSO management, outside agencies, and the public

Job Requirements

I. QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

[ ] Associate's Degree [X] Preferred

[ ] Bachelor's Degree [X] Preferred

Preferred Major(s): Criminal Justice, Psychology, or other related field.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

· The following experience is required and must be verifiable:

1. 1200 hours Pilot in Command (PIC) for Rotorcraft – Helicopter, with at least 50 hours being in the last 12 months

2. At least 100 hours of turbine (Rotorcraft – Helicopter)

· The following experience is preferred :

1. Hold a current Transport Pilot Certificate (ATP) for Rotorcraft – Helicopter

2. Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) with Rotorcraft – Helicopter rating, or MUST obtain this rating within twelve (12) months of being appointed Chief Pilot

3. Night Vision Goggle (NVG) flight experience

4. Law Enforcement experience

5. Bell 206B/OH-58 experience

· Any combination of education and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSING:

· Commercial Pilot Rotorcraft – Helicopter

· Instrument Rated Rotorcraft – Helicopter

· Current, valid Florida driver license

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

· Sit and stand for extended periods

· See and hear at a normal range or with accommodation

· Speak, read, write, and understand English fluently

· Ambulate independently

· Lift/carry 150+ pounds

· Push/pull moderate to heavy loads

· Bend, squat, kneel and crawl

· Reach and climb

· Manual dexterity

· Drive a vehicle

· Pass any other mandated courses/training requiring physical abilities
