The College of Liberal Arts is seeking an Academic Advisor. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, professional faculty position.

This position provides academic advising to first-year students in the College of Liberal Arts. This position works with first time students and transfer students in the College of Liberal Arts Advising Center. Academic advising is the interface between undergraduate students and the university. Advisors explain requirements, academic regulations, discuss career goals, graduate school interest, and help students understand how OSU can support their educational goals. Academic Advisors look at every potential student interaction as a learning experience. The Academic Advisors in the College of Liberal Arts are champions of a Liberal Arts education and are passionate about it being at the core of higher education.

The advisor will advise e-campus and on-campus students. This requires various forms of communication including in-person appointments, telephone appointments, Zoom, e-mail, etc.

All duties include working with diverse student populations representing a variety of backgrounds, needs, and skills. Important aspects of the work include a holistic approach to academic advising, attention to detail, and frequent contact with other units within the university.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff) / Guidelines (Faculty):

Typically requires Bachelors Degree in field related to work assigned.

Requirements :

  • Bachelor's degree in discipline of choice.
  • Two-years of academic advising experience OR two years of experience working with college students providing advising related support on issues such as academic success, academic coaching, counseling, orientation, student support, or retention services.
  • Strong communication skills: written, oral, and interpersonal and a demonstrated ability to communicate successfully and inclusively, both in writing and verbally, with a diverse audience.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to maintain student records accurately and with confidentially.
  • Problem solving skills, attention to detail and the ability to work independently.


This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months

Type:

This office is student centered and works collaboratively. A willingness to engage with colleagues and campus partners is important to a functional office and helps provide exceptional support to students. Typically, M-F 8am to 5pm, some evenings and weekends required.
